Science under the Microscope

A Philosophical Investigation

Upcoming

Summary

In this book, science has its say. But not with the pretension that science has the last word. We want to look beyond the scientific nose. And for that you need a philosophical analysis. That amounts to putting science under “the microscope of philosophy.” I chose the image of a microscope to make visible what is invisible to the naked eye.

Each chapter offers an analysis of a scientific issue that tries to go to the bone. The aim is to make what scientists do and don’t do a little more transparent. This analysis is sometimes new, sometimes different, sometimes daring, sometimes unexpected, but—we hope—never boring.

One final word of caution. What we need here is a fair and unbiased assessment. Unfortunately, that may not be an easy task. Albert Einstein was right when he warned us, “It is easier to split atoms than prejudices.” But let’s at least give it a try. Whether that works is for the reader to decide.
